Welcome to Mars

I’ve been listening to this awesome podcast/lecture series about the fantasy of science in the late 40’s and 50’s.  There was some facinating stuff going on!  For example, I was surprised to learn that in 1947 the first transistor was developed, Sandoz Laboratories started marketing LSD in the US under the brand name “Delysid,” the first massive suburban building projects opened up, and aliens crashed at Roswell amist a wash of UFO sightings around the world.

The podcasts can be downloaded here:  http://www.simonsound.co.uk/podcasts/marspodcast.xml

I’d be very interested to hear what other people think of them.  The podcast also features some pretty spacy retro electronica and acoustically altered vintage radio ads from the period.

SPX/life update

I was realizing today that I miss you guys. I’ve been a little depressed and I think it’s because I’m lonely for the people I miss. I also am tired of being surrounded by people on all sides. No space to escape to just think. But maybe that’s just the fall? I don’t know.

SPX went well. I posted a few photos of it up on my flickr page a few days ago. I managed to sell out of Jumbly Junkery 3 (the one with the spray paint yeti on the front), and I sold 10 of Jumbly Junkery 5. I only sold a couple of the other two, but I thought that wasn’t so bad for a second convention. I made a few friends, too, who unfortunately don’t live around here.

Though, I have been making headway on the getting to know people around my age who are interesting around here. I made friends with the wine store guy. He’s really funny and chill. There’s this flower shop that turns into a bar at night. Friday, we went and drank some and we met some of his friends. I actually had fun at a bar for the first time in a long long long time. I usually hate them.

Our vacuum cleaner broke. My allergies are horrible now. There’s cat hair on all the carpets!

How are you all doing?

I Quit!

I handed in my letter of resignation this week.  Tuesday.  My last day will be the 31st of October.  I don’t know if I will wear a costume or not.  I usually don’t have a good costume for haloween.  But still, I’m super excited.  And a little scared.  Not just because I could end up completly broke and turning trix on the street, but because there is a chance that I might not be good enough to do the thing that I really want to do, even though I am going to really really try.  The question is, is it better to be on your deathbed wondering if you could have lived your dream, or knowing that you could not have?  I mean, of course, the best is to go ahead and actually live it.  But, if that isn’t an option.  Not looking for encouragement or anything like that, just wondering.  What is the real value of “yeah, I could have…”?

Wasps!

My studio is full of wasps.

Well, not really “full,” but it has a lot of them in it.  Look:

Wasps!

See?  That is a pile of sleeping wasps.  They were waking up, one and two at a time, while I was exposing this screen for Amanda:

Some screen for Amanda

And they kept flying into the light and then passing out and dropping to the floor.  Then they would wake up and walk around for a while, before starting to fly again.  I collected about a dozen of them in a tin previously used to hold coffee grounds.  I closed the lid on the tin and a little while later I could hear wasps banging against the sides of the tin.

I just left them there.  I hope they are gone tomorrow.

Meanwhile, here is what I have made:

McAnulty, this is in answer to your comment earlier this evening.

you can tell my voice is a little rough right now, but hopefully the songs are interesting anyway. hope everybody is doing well, and that everybody is getting something good out of the fall (other than bacterial invasions).

3 figures for Laura

We finally found the camera cable to download pictures to this computer and I managed to draw two other figures. Unfortunately this computer does not have any image editing software to size them down. For now I’ll just post what I’ve uploaded to flickr. (I do not have a pro account anymore so all my organized sets are gone)
